The town was named Milltown because of mills along the east Brandywine river. which was found by Daniel Butter. The Butter family had paper mills in the area, and Fredrick from Winter burg, Germany, was the patriarch of the paper families. By time of the revolution, Milltown was more commonly known as Downingtown after the businessman Thomas Downing, an immigrant in 1717 from Devon, England, who owned a number of those mills. The ton was officially named Downingtown in 1812.
The town is located near the Lincoln Highway which runs from the East to the West . It was an early west road in the wagon days known as the Philadelphia turnpike . The Lincoln Highway was the first paved road to become parallel to the nation from the Atlantic to the pacific. Construction of the Downingtown turnpike began in the early 40s and was completed in the early 50s. it runs north to US 30, bypassing Downingtown PA. The movie the blob was filmed in and around Downingtown. The diner in the movie, then called the Downingtown Diner, was sold and transported to another state and has been replaced with a similar 50’s style diner. Continuing to be known as the home of the Blob, it has changed ownership many times over the years but is still open as of 2017.
Thomas Downing lived in Downingtown’s famous Log House in 1739. It remained in the Downingtown family until 1940, when Thomas W. Downing died and left it to the borough of Downingtown. The borough did some work to the Downingtown Log House in 1947. It was the home to the Downingtown Chamber of Commerce from 1950 until 1988. But the Log House was soon to be torn down as Route 30 had been built close to it. Located 18 inches (46 cm) below street level, the house suffered water damage because runoff from Route 30. vibration from traffic also damaged the structure.
