Strasburg, VA Personal Insurance Advisors
In the early beginnings, German-speaking Pennsylvanians were among the first non-native settlers to arrive in the northern Shenandoah Valley and Strasburg area in Virginia. The amazing greenery and fertilized land were perfect targets for immigrant farmers looking for work. On August 21, 1734 Henry Willis was granted 2,030 acres total of this land by William Gooch, Virginia’s Lieutenant Governor and Commander in Chief. Gooch wanted to settle the valley to build a divider between Native American tribes and the rest of the Virginia colony. During the summer of 1735, Willis had sold his entire land promise to Jacob Funk. Jacob then, took his new purchase, reselling a part of it to his brother John, the brothers then built a legacy in Strasburg, VA.
In comparison to the English culture founded east of the Blue Ridge river, Strasburg was founded with family farms and towns instead of factories, there were few slaves, and less German language, as well as religions, architecture and arts. The thriving agricultural community that grew in the fertile bottoms along the banks of the Shenandoah River made scenic views of the Massanutten and Allegheny Mountains. Later nicknamed “Pot Town,” Strasburg also became a heart for the production of both nice and fancy earthenware and stoneware pottery. During the 19th and 20th centuries, many worked for the railroad industry and at limestone quarries, after WW II, other industries came to Strasburg, such as paper and auto parts manufacturer. Today Strasburg boasts a growing service economy, museums, charming eateries, and many antique stores and other shops. Regardless of its location only 80 miles from D.C. Strasburg has maintained its hospitable small town charm.
